Congratulations to our 2018 Youth Philanthropy Contest Winners!

The Rescue Team – The Zone Afterschool Program participants Josie Hansen, Emily Carranza, and Deya Arreguin – Their project is to support some of the ongoing needs at the Rescue Mission by providing personal care packages to new residents, helping with childcare, and updating the playground.

Technology and “Exergaming” 101 – Makenna, Cameryn, and Cohen Skiff – This group will teach adults with mental illnesses at the Liberty Center some basics about technology and give them an opportunity to experiences the benefits of “exergaming.”

NC Prayer Care Package – Mrs. Anderson’s 3rd Grade Class & Mrs. Pfeifer’s Preschool Class at Norfolk Catholic – This group provides cancer patients in the Carson Cancer Center at Faith Regional Hospital with a physical, spiritual, and emotional boost meant to help them through the difficult times they will face.

Fernando’s Closet – Taryn Tjaden Dominiack – This project will supply clothes and athletic supplies to children in foster care and help foster children with transitioning out of foster care to college or their first apartment.

If the Shoe Fits – Nishyia and Pareena Ponniah – The project will provide custom shoes for children with braces so the shoes can comfortably fit their feet.

Blankets with Care – Elizabeth Broders – This project will supply blankets that help with different disorders such as autism, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological disorder.

The Kind Campaign – Kassidy Nelson, Alexis Roberts, Noelia DeLara, Haley Storovich, Pareena Ponniah, Rylie Moler, Valeria Jimenez, and Mia Carrion – This group’s goal is to end girl bullying and strengthen relationships between girls.

Volunteering for the Win – Northeast Community College Student Leadership Association – This group will organize a healthy competition among organizations on campus to promote and encourage community service.

Hope Floats – Salvation Army Girls Guard Troop – Deborah Ortiz, Olivia Scurlock, Jacqueline Benitez, Nevaeh Lewis, Ayasha Garcia, Samantha Norton, Kayla Reyna, Breana Board, and Savannah Johnson – The group will be lifting hearts in Norfolk by doing an Ice Cream Social for community servants, sewing heart monitor bags for heart patients, and gifting goodies and mugs to people in the hospital.

Essays to Camp Adventure – Salvation Army Adventure Corps Rangers – Xavier Standley, Tony Cuevas, Adrian Board, Dominic Duskin, Oda Limonta Cruz, Antonia Vetter, and Ronaldo TaxTzunun – The group will sponsor a writing contest that will award 25 camp scholarships to kids around Norfolk and a community day camp for all contest participants.

Applications for the 2019 Youth Philanthropy Contest will be available Fall 2018.
